Therapeutic Foster Care

Therapeutic foster care is central to our work. We provide therapeutic foster care for young people and therapeutic consultations for carers as a core part of our comprehensive package of support.

For young people who have experienced difficult childhoods, therapy can be a way to help them express their emotions and overcome the challenges they face. Ultimately, ISP hopes to give young people the ability to grow and mature into well-rounded adults. We provide multidimensional foster care and foster care training.

The ISP therapy team

The ISP therapy team is a well-established and multi-disciplinary group of professionals who represent a cross-section of clinical expertise and experience, including:

  • Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy
  • Systemic Family Therapy
  • Cognitive/Behavioural Therapy
  • Play Therapy
  • Psychotherapy
  • Art Therapy
  • Speech and Language Therapy

Our therapists aim to:

Offer young people a time and place where they can reflect on their experiences.

Help young people to know and discover their feelings.

Enable young people to experience a trusting and safe long-term relationship with an adult.

Provide young people with a place where they can share their fears, fantasies, dreams and aspirations without fear of ridicule or repercussion.

Encourage young people to express themselves in their own way and at their own pace.

Allow young people to rediscover play.

Each young person is treated individually and offered a tailored therapy programme that is suited to their personal needs.

ISP therapy may take several forms. It can be assessment only, a transfer from a previous therapist, short-term assistance or long-term help conducted over several years. Each centre offers well-resourced therapy rooms so young people can be assisted close to their foster homes in a familiar environment.

If a young person does not require therapy for him / herself, a therapist may be involved in the professional network supporting the child. We often provide therapeutic support for carers and staff.

To enhance knowledge and improve working practices, the team regularly meets to pool ideas and share information. We aim to respond quickly to all requests for therapy and take an active role in the wider research and therapeutic care community.
